Fall Semester Programs

The Culture, Portuguese Language, Business & Courses with Locals program is open to all Portuguese proficiency levels. The program offers students business and cultural studies courses taught in English as well as courses with locals, in a variety of subjects, taught in Portuguese. Course topics (for courses in English) include studies on ethnicity and society, consumer behavior, global economy, intercultural development and contemporary cultural studies. In addition, students may select from Portuguese language courses at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as a Portuguese for Spanish Speakers course. Students may also enroll in elective courses instructed in Portuguese at all levels taken alogside international students.

Students with an advanced level of Portuguese may select from courses with local students in various departments at the host university. Courses with locals are mostly 72 contact hours each and are taught at several campuses across the greater Florianópolis area.

All courses are taught at the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina by local university professors. ISA-Veritas students primarily take classes alongside ISA-Veritas students.

Semester + Semester Programs Available: Students may participate in the Spring + Fall OR the Fall + Spring sessions of this program by selecting their two semesters of interest when submitting the initial ISA online application. Veritas Courses

Students are required to maintain fulltime student status during their programs, including:

  • Cross-Cultural Leadership required when minimum enrollment met
    • (45 contact hours/3 semester credits; taught by Veritas professor)
  • International Missions/Service-Learning Practicum required
    • (1-3 semester credits; facilitated by Veritas Mission Mentor)
  • Other courses at the UNISUL to maintain fulltime student status

Participation in Veritas courses is required in order to enhance the Veritas experience.

 

Cross-Cultural Leadership (3 credits)

This course examines the impact of culture on concepts of leadership, values, expectations, and patterns of communication to demonstrate the importance of leading with cultural sensitivity and to assist students in developing their own strategies for effectively communicating and negotiating with individuals from varied cultures; especially when it relates to a cross-cultural ministry perspective. Study is also devoted to the development and current conditions of minority/majority relations through the study of sociopolitical and economic causes; consequences of prejudice and discrimination; stereotypes and realities. This course is taught online, using WebEx video conferencing software and a dedicated tech-ready distance learning classroom. Students from three different Veritas programs in Argentina, Brazil, and Peru all log into the virtual class, led by a dynamic and enthusiastic professor located in the United States. The online platform enables course materials and discussions to encompass multicultural views and experiences, giving participants enhanced cross-cultural perspectives and increased global awareness.

International Missions/Service-learning practicum (1-3 credits)

The practicum will enrich the program and mission experience through reflection assignments, research, and journaling. Participation is required in order to enhance the mission experience. Students will receive one credit upon completing the assignments and service participation. Students may elect to submit a log of hours for up to two additional credits. (Download syllabus here)
