Overview

Assessment: critical literature review (2000 words)
This module aims to provide students with detailed, theoretical and practical insights into those research methods that are relevant for both the critical consumption of research results as well as the formulation of independent, small-scale research projects. It also intends to facilitate a detailed understanding for students on how best to exploit, in an informed way, the research findings of others that they come across in their studies; a critical literature review of published materials will be considered and assessed. The module continues to provide a systematic, structured and detailed account of a range of research methods applicable to the academic study of sport including investigative techniques that are used to study the historical, socio-economic, political and cultural significance of sport and exercise as well as multi-factorial research designs and their statistical analyses using SPSS software.
Students also have the opportunity to design their own project and to present this as a research proposal which may be used towards their 3rd year Dissertation.
