Overview

Assessment: portfolio [50%], essay (2000 words) [50%]
Children today spend a great deal of time on various mobile devices, playing games, watching television and video, and many are avid consumers of films, paper-based magazines, books and other media. These different media now constitute one of the most salient influences on the education and socialisation of children. It is therefore increasingly important that educators understand the impact of these activities, and that children are equipped to manage their experiences. This module considers: (a) the range of media produced for children, such as children?s television, magazines and advertisements for children; and (b) media about children, such as film and photography that feature children. Throughout the module, issues for educators are addressed, showing how students can help children make sense of the media in critical, careful ways.
