This module introduces students to a range of ways in which music is used theatre and performance; musical theatre, theatre as music, staged concerts. Students will explore various relationships between music, form, sound, technology and the theatrical presence of performers and objects on stage. Theoretical and historical perspectives are examined to provide contextual knowledge of the development of music theatre forms in the 20th Century and earlier. Students will engage with current developments in the field of theatre and performance studies, along with developments in ?new musicology?, through which the social, cultural and political dimensions of music making and performance can be explored. Students will be introduced to a range of issues and ideas emerging form the study of music as performance; reception, spectatorship, presence. The module will introduce students to a range of approaches to studying and analyzing music as performance; sociological, historical, ethnographic.
