Provides a foundation for experiencing, understanding and appreciating the diversity of dance and its relationship to various cultures and societies.

Dance genres/styles are expressions of creativity and cultural identity and may be participated in for a variety of reasons. This paper introduces the background, purposes and practices of a range of traditional and contemporary dance genres/styles, including how they have been influenced by historical events, individuals, globalisation and technology. This paper is particularly relevant for students who wish to specialise in dance education, community dance or performing arts.

Learning Outcomes
1.To examine and describe the development and practices of a variety of traditional and contemporary dance genres/styles
2.To analyse, interpret and discuss how dances communicate and express ideas, values and beliefs
3.To demonstrate a range of dance techniques and choreography in the style of specific cultures, genres and/or historical periods
4.To perform a variety of learned dances to an audience
5.To develop skills and knowledge to support the implementation of the Understanding Dance in Context strand of the Arts Curriculum for Schools

Course Structure
This course consists of practical workshops, seminars and tutorials. It contains three main topics:
-Dance and ritual
-Dance and cultural expression
-Dance and popular culture

Each of the three topics will have required reading.
