A survey of selected children?s literature texts, focusing on issues related to contemporary discourse. Aims to assist students in developing the skills of literary criticism, with an emphasis on breadth of reading and critical analysis.

As the title indicates, this paper is a survey course that is designed to excite your interest in the multimedia field that is children's literature. From a consideration of the origins of the genre through to exploration of contemporary texts, you will be challenged and stimulated by the comprehensive coverage the paper offers.

-Evaluate research in selected areas of children's literature
-Identify sociocultural contexts and issues
-Examine how picture book art and written text combine to construct meaning

Course Structure
This course's structure offers an introduction to a range of selected children's literature texts from classics to contemporary. It focuses on issues related to discourse analysis and aims to help students develop the skills of literary criticism through interrogation of print and digital texts. Main topics include:
-Analysis of the production of literature for children in a sociocultural context
-Mythology and archetypes
-Gender, race and class in children's literature
-Art and text
-Notions of quality in book selection

Text books are not required for this paper.
Students are expected to source the weekly readings through the Robertson library's e-reserve.
