Overview

Short Description
The formation and diagenetic alteration of sedimentary rocks.

Course Aims
To describe the environments of deposition of sedimentary rocks and the sedimentary processes effecting their character.
To evaluate methods of assessing the provenance of clastic sedimentary rocks.
To describe the processes and products of diagenetic alteration of sedimentary rocks and evaluate the impact of diagenesis on the porosity and permeability of sedimentary rocks.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
1 To identify and describe sedimentary rocks in hand specimen and thin section.
2. To recall the controls on diagenesis of sedimentary rocks and their influence on porosity and permeability and potential for hydrocarbon exploration.
3. To summarise the mineralogical and textural changes that occur in mudrocks during burial diagenesis.
4. To describe how changes in Phanerozoic ocean chemistry are recorded in the rock record.
5. To summarise how terrestrial carbonates can be used as climate proxies.
6. To evaluate the provenance of clastic sedimentary rocks.
