Overview

This module introduces students to some of the themes and concepts which underpin our understanding of digital media as it operates in the world today. Students will explore the potential of the principles of creativity in digital environments. Although there will be some refresher workshops on relevant production software packages, this is not a technical skills module: the aim is to develop some of the technical aspects of digital media students have already learned, placing them within the context of critical practice, to consider their creative potential and their cultural impact. Flipped content, accessed through VLE, will introduce the key themes. For the first half of the workshops, students will discuss themes and content they have accessed in advance, having worked through the material at their own pace in preparation for the workshop. They are also expected to read set materials in advance for discussion of some of the ideas that shape digital media contexts.  The second half of the workshops are lab-oriented, and students will test these ideas out through practice-based research. The module takes a heuristic approach – that is to say, hands-on, critical engagement and exploratory investigation of some of the key issues in digital media studies today.
