Overview

On this module, we will explore the relationship between language and the brain. We will primarily investigate
two areas of psycholinguistic research: the Mental Lexicon: how we learn, store, process and remember words;
how we understand the meanings of words and how we create new words; Language Acquisition: the processes
through which we acquire language; the differences between first and second language acquisition and
learning; bilingual language acquisition. Our examples will be taken mostly from English, but also from other
languages as appropriate. No prior experience of linguistic analysis will be assumed. The course will be based on
two lectures and one seminar per week.
