Overview

To provide a basic understanding of the key concepts in ecology by introducing the core principles of behavioural, organismal, population, community and ecosystem ecology and of global patterns of biodiversity. 

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Understand key ecological theories, with application to novel scenarios

Calculate population sizes and biodiversity indices using a variety of techniques

Identify local animal and plant species

Estimate forest structure and biomass, and understand how they interact

Use Excel to calculate ecological indices and generate graphics
