Overview

The module aims to provide an introduction to the housing, which is central in building effective homes and communities. The first part of the module examines the way housing is provided and the different forms of housing tenure such as social rent, private rent, home-ownership, co-housing. It then moves on to explore aspects of the policy process in housing, including the role of the UK and Scottish Parliament, as well as policy debates on such issues as affordability and sustainability. The remainder of the module looks at key issues in relation to the role of housing in society, with a focus on the social exclusion of particular groups (such as homeless people, disabled people, and people from minority ethnic groups), and recurrent social issues such as housing and inequality. The module will explore key debates in the housing sector such as ‘generation rent’, ageing and dementia and homelessness.
