Overview

Course outline:
This course aims to develop an understanding of the mechanics of solids. Topics include: statically determinate force systems, free body diagrams; Stress-strain relations, elastic constants; statically determinate stress systems, direct stress, shear stress, bending stress, torsional stress; bending moment diagrams, shear force diagrams, deflection of beams; torsion, and struts. Stress and strain transformations, compound stress in 2 dimensions, and Mohr's circle are also covered.

Assessment: Class Tests 25%, Examination 75%, June examination 3 hours.

Course Entry Requirements: MAM1042S, MAM1020 (or equivalent) and PHY1012S, or DP for MAM1003W and PHY1010W
