Course Description
This intermediate-level conversation course will give you the opportunity to practice using English to discuss a variety of topics of current interest in the world around us. The goal is for you to become comfortable engaging in and developing the conversation on a variety of topics that are both familiar and unfamiliar to you. Lack of knowledge or experience with a topic will not be accepted as an excuse for lack of participation in class. A good conversationalist finds a way to engage in conversation on various topics. Though you will not be required to have specific knowledge on every topic, you will be expected to come up with an opinion on every topic. This can be accomplished by linking the topic to knowledge and experiences that are both related to the topic and already familiar to you.

Students will also be responsible for monitoring group discussions from time to time and to give a short analytical summary of the group's discussions at the end of the class hour.

You will be evaluated daily in class based on:

  • Your preparedness for discussion (including having the article with you in class and possible discussion questions prepared in written form)
  • Your familiarity with the reading
  • Your expression of a clear and logical opinion on the topic
  •  Your active effort and ability to extend and develop a conversation on the topic
  •  Your ability to communicate effectively in English with your conversation partners
  • Your ability to summarize and analyze group discussions
