Course Description
ID and classification of volcanic and plutonic igneous rocks. Introduction to
igneous petrogenesis. Introduction to (1) hand specimens of all major
igneous rock types; (2) the petrographic microscope and its application to
the ID and description of magmatic rocks and minerals of igneous rocks; and
(3) major element geochemical data manipulation and interpretation.

Learning Outcomes
Students will learn how and in which type of tectonic environments the
major types of igneous rocks form and basic principles of igneous petrology
and petrogenesis; how to examine, describe and identify igneous rocks and
rock-forming minerals in hand specimen and in thin section; and how to
manipulate and interpret whole rock geochemical data
