Overview

Course Description
In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop reading skills and to enhance speaking and listening skills in English through interaction with a wide variety of subjects of interest to young adults. Our focus will be on (1) becoming more comfortable reading English in various styles and structures, (2) learning the grammar and vocabulary necessary to allow clarity and precision in academic writing and reading, and (3) developing critical reading and thinking skills.

Required Textbook
Book reading: To promote an extensive and in-depth reading and class discussion, students will read one of the books below. On the first and second weeks of the semester, students will decide what to read under the instructor’s guidance.

  • Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
  • The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins
