Overview

Course Description: In this course, we will read a variety of materials and produce different kinds of writing. Writing is a process, from brainstorming to the final draft. We will also discuss grammatical accuracy and improve our skills through practice.

Course Objectives:
By the end of the course, you will improve your ability to:

? read essays on different issues and build vocabulary.
? think critically.
? paraphrase, summarize, and react to reading materials/state own views.

Course Materials:
Course materials will consist of various handouts throughout the semester. Students will be expected to bring all handouts to each class. Forgetting to bring class materials will result in a lower grade.

Class participation:
This includes attendance and preparation for the class. Active participation is very important. Students will work individually, in pairs, small groups, and as a whole class. It is each student?s responsibility to actively participate in class activities and discussions.

Attendance: Attendance is extremely important and you are expected to attend every class. If you are absent more than five times you will fail the course. You should tell the instructor the reason for an absence as soon as possible so that the absence may be excused. Absences, excused or not, will affect participation grade.

Tardiness: If a student is late for class, the amount of time that he is late will be converted into class absences. For example, if a student is late by 10 minutes for five classes, that will count as one absence. If a student is more than 20 minutes late for a class, he will be counted as absent. Tardiness will also affect participation grade.

Plagiarism: Copying will result in a grade of F on assignments or for the course. This is a very serious academic offense and will be reported to the head of the department. There are no excuses. Use your own work and use proper citations if you quote from others.

Cell phones: Do not use your cell phone in class. Please keep your phone turned off and out of sight during the class
