Course Description
This course will give you the opportunity to practice using English to discuss a variety of topics of current interest in the world around us. The goal is for you to become comfortable engaging in and developing a conversation on a variety of topics that are both familiar and unfamiliar to you. Lack of knowledge or experience with a topic will not be accepted as an excuse for lack of participation in class. A good conversationalist finds a way to engage in conversation on various topics. Though you will not be required to have specific knowledge on every topic, you will be expected to come up with an opinion on every topic. This can be accomplished by linking the topic to knowledge and experiences that are both related to the topic and already familiar to you.

You will be evaluated daily in class based on:

  • Your preparedness for discussion (including having the article with you in class and possible discussion questions prepared in written form)
  • Your familiarity with the reading
  • Your expression of a clear and logical opinion on the topic
  • Your ability to help extend and develop a conversation on the topic
  • Your ability to communicate effectively in English with your conversation partners

Every student in the class will lead a class for one day. This leading of class will include addressing any problems students may have had with the article and organizing the discussion for that day. You will also be responsible for floating through the groups during the discussion to check on their progress. You are expected to guide the class in developing a meaningful and well-developed discussion on the theme(s) of the article that is appropriate for university-level work.

A course reader for the class will be available for purchase in the Main Library Copy Center.
