TEXTBOOK: The textbook, Advanced Writing, can be purchased at the university copy center. Students will find a good dictionary and grammar handbook very useful. A thesaurus is also helpful.

OBJECTIVES: Advanced Writing will help students become more proficient as writers by studying and practicing traditional organizational patterns for English academic writing. Emphasis will also be placed on producing strong, effective sentences and paragraphs. Grammar and vocabulary will be reviewed to correct weak, inaccurate writing.

EVALUATION: Grades will be based on class attendance, class participation, effort, improvement, and performance.

Essays: 20%
Journal: 20%
Mid-term: 25%
Final: 25%
Effort and improvement: 10%

The mid-term and final examinations are essays. Grades will be determined by proper use of the required format and the writer?s success in communicating via that format.

Plagiarism is unacceptable. It is, unfortunately, all too commonplace. If an assignment is plagiarized, it will not be accepted, and its replacement will be graded down.
