Overview

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the study of language. We address the
issues related to human language by going through various aspects of language structure as a system
of communication. The course specifically aims to give you a reasonable taste of what we can study
about language ? sound system, word formation, sentence structure, word/sentence meaning, language
acquisition, etc. It also aims to provide basic tools and techniques used in linguistic analysis so that you will become acquainted with practical English linguistic approaches to the systematic study of language in the field.

Expected Learning Outcomes:
1. Students understand basic terminologies, concepts and constructs of linguistics.
2. Students become familiar with the linguistic analysis of natural language

Participation
All students are expected to attend class with prior reading of the chapter or the article assigned for the class. Students will be asked to participate in in-class activities and discussions that cover relevant issues of the topic in the class.
