This course aims to introduce you to a selection of English literary works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the eighteenth century. We will read a number of texts in different genres written by both male and female authors, considering the historical, intellectual, and cultural contexts in which these texts were produced. My primary goal for this course is to read the selected texts carefully with an eye and an ear for language. Your close reading of the works that have been considered as landmarks of English literature will enhance your critical thinking as well as your understanding of the continuities and discrepancies in literary history. The class schedule is organized according to chronological order except for cases in which a comparison among various works of the same genre is beneficial.
