Overview

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to important puzzles and questions about Japanese politics, and to discuss various ways in which scholars have attempted to solve these puzzles. No prior knowledge of Japanese politics is required. However, students are expected to come to class having done the reading and prepared to answer questions in class based on the readings and discuss the course material. Although the course will have a lecture format, my aim is to make the class as interactive as possible so that we have a more proactive and fun learning experience. In order to facilitate this, the course will incorporate student presentations and discussions. Details will be finalized through consultation with students and in consideration of our class size.

Readings have been chosen to help students grasp the major issues and debates in contemporary Japanese politics. The syllabus and weekly readings are subject to change before and throughout the semester. Please make sure that you have the most recently updated version of the syllabus.
