Overview

Course Description

The influence of American culture around the world is often seen as both an inspiration and a frustration. With this in mind, together we will examine current popular culture in the United States and the historical and social factors that have influenced its development. Source materials for the class will be drawn from various media, such as English-language news sources, online reference materials, television programs, and American films. Some examples of possible topics will be:
-American values
-Superheroes
-Politics
-Asian American history
-Education
-University campus life
-Social interactions
-Food
-Pop culture

Though the class will be conducted primarily as a lecture course, student participation in class discussions is expected. Students will be expected to have completed all assigned readings prior to class. No late assignments will be accepted.

Textbook: A course reader for this class will be available in the Main Library Copy Center. Instructor will advise when it is ready.

Class Attendance: Attendance will be taken at every class meeting.
