Overview

Course Outline

- This course provides fundamental theories on the physical metallurgy, in particular, based on the thermodynamics. The class starts with an introduction of basic concepts of phase equilibrium and diffusion. Then, we focus on the knowledge of material properties such as solidification, precipitation, diffusional transformations, and diffusionless transformations that can be applied to advanced material engineering/new material development.

Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the underlying principles that determine the evolution of microstructures in metals and alloys during their processing and its relation with properties & performance in service.
