What is San José Like? 

San José, or Chepe, as it is lovingly called by locals, is the political, economic and cultural hub of Costa Rica. The city allows you to experience a bustling and cosmopolitan Latin American metropolis while also having the rest of Costa Rica's pristine wonders at your fingertips.

Veritas University is an independent private university, fully accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education and authorized by the National Council of Private Higher Education (Consejo Nacional de Enseñanza Superior Privada, or CONESUP). The University is renowned in Costa Rica for its design, art, architecture and photography programs. Additionally, it prioritizes internationalization and welcomes several hundred international students during any given semester or summer to study through its International Programs Department (DPI). ISA students have access to all of the university's amenities, including computer labs, wireless internet, a library, a cafeteria, and photography labs and studios, should their courses require them. Staff and faculty at the university are easily accessible to students. Spanish language and elective professors provide students with office hours and will also make appointments for special meetings.

There are Semester, Summer and Langauge Intensive Month programs available in San José, Costa Rica.  Students who choose to do multiple programs will receive a discount.

Language Requirement:

NONE. Programs are open to all language levels. Language of instruction is Spanish and English.

Academic Overview

Semester Programs (Spring, Fall & Academic Year)

Students are required to maintain full-time student status during their programs, including:

  • One Veritas course: Global Missions Perspectives (optional and only offered when min. enrollment of 6 student on-site met)
  • International Missions/Service-Learning Practicum optional
  • Other courses at Universidad Veritas to maintain full-time student status

Summer Programs

Students will enroll in the following:

  • One-Two courses at Universidad Veritas, required
  • International Missions/Service-Learning Practicum optional

Language Level Placement

All students will take placement exams once accepted into the program previous to departure to determine language proficiency level. Exam results may determine eligibility for course enrollment. Students who arrive having completed the following number of semesters/quarters of college-level Spanish, or the equivalent, typically place into the corresponding language level:
