Overview

Course Outline

Aims: Today?s engineering and science students routinely encounter
problems involving numerical solution techniques. Sometimes these
solutions are ?automatically? generated by a software package. In other
cases, they should adopt programming skills to devise their own
solutions. In either case, knowledge of numerical methods is surely
inevitable in developing and interpreting such solutions. Based upon
the acquired knowledge from Engineering Mathematics I and II, this
course provides students with the fundamental concept and practice of
numerical analysis that are certainly used in higher-level undergraduate
courses or graduate-level researches and courses.

This course will be taught in English.

Course Format

Lectures: I expect all students to attend class regularly, and to arrive at class on
time. If you arrive late (except for special cases), I will consider you to
be absent. In the real world of engineering, you will need to be on
time! I will have no sympathy for students who regularly miss class
without an appropriate excuse. If you have an illness, death in the
family, or other such emergency that requires you to miss more than
one class, let me know. If for some other legitimate reason you must
miss class, let me know so that I can accommodate your special needs.
If you have a previous class far from the lecture room just before
Numerical Analysis, please let me and TA?s know it.
Lab. Hours We are going to use one hour or two for laboratory activity every week.
During this time, students should exercise learnings in the lecture and
make their own program in Fortran or Matlab, or other programming
languages. Most lab sessions will be guided by the class TAs.

Homework (lab-base)

Homework will be given on a weekly basis and due in one week and at
the beginning of the designated class period. Late homework will have
considerable penalty on your homework grade. You are encouraged to
work with other students, but the homework that you submit must be
your own. In trying to solve homework problems, you will apply the
knowledge you are taught in class. Homework normally involves
extensive use of relevant mathematical equations and is programming
intensive. This will help you better understand how to apply numerical
techniques for the solution to engineering problems.

Term Project: We have one or two term project. The instructor will give an idea on
the term project in class.

Exam: There is one comprehensive midterm exam. The midterm exam will be
given at the scheduled examination period for this class. In the exams
you will be asked both qualitative and quantitative questions. The
exams are not mere repetition of the homework, but you will be asked
to apply materials that you have learned in class.
