Overview

Assessment: essay (3500 words) [100%], essay plan [required]
This module examines some of the complex ways that gender categories and relations were culturally constructed in the nineteenth century. In the process, the course explores the interaction of gender relationship, class and race in the nineteenth century in comparative perspective. The module includes close analysis of a range of primary sources selected for their particular application in writing cultural history (in particular, visual representations, artefacts, novels and newspapers), theoretical work on using such sources for historical research, and historiographical analysis. At the same time, students are encouraged to relate cultural history to the present day.
