This module examines dance art from theatrical, performance studies and gender studies perspectives. It provides students with an opportunity to critically understand gender constructions both on stage and in everyday life as performance. Students will be exposed to a range of theoretical frameworks including those of post-structuralism, postmodernism, feminism, cultural studies, queer studies, and transgender studies, and learn to apply these to specific case studies in dance, theatre and performance art. Seminal theories will be studied historically and as they were articulated within diverse disciplines such as anthropology, literary studies, cultural studies, psychoanalytic and film studies.
