Assessment: essay (4000 words)
This module explores understandings of young people in society, using theoretical and empirical material to examine representations, myths and stereotypes of youth from diverse perspectives. It considers changing attitudes in society to young people, and ways in which young people identify themselves and their roles in relation to social institutions, such as schools, public and community services and government. It takes perspectives of class, race, gender, sexuality, and youth sub-cultures and examines different young people?s participation, inclusion and exclusion. The module also covers key debates related to the emerging policies and practices in the area of youth participation. It enables students to locate youth participation developments in wider understandings of political and sociological theory.
