This module explores current legislation concerning the need for professionals to build an effective working relationship with parents. If the welfare of the child, who is at the centre, is to remain paramount, parents should be valued as people with a contribution to make. At a time when little or no training is available for working with parents, it is important that students gain an informed understanding of the challenge of maintaining a balance of power between parents and professionals and to address issues such as cultural diversity and support systems.
