Each Veritas program includes several excursions designed to help students gain a more in-depth cultural and historical understanding of the host country and region. Excursions are included in the program cost and cover ground transportation, entrance fees, and guided tours. Accommodations and breakfast are included on all overnight excursions. Some excursions may not be available for all terms. Optional excursions may be provided at an extra cost.



Aquila Game Reserve is a big 5 game reserve close to Cape Town. It is a 7500 hectare conservancy where students will have the chance to go on safari and hope to spot the Big 5: the elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, lion and the African buffalo. Students are given the opportunity to volunteer some of their time and energy into helping a part of the Touws River community, and will subsequently learn about the history and culture of this community. Students will: Refurbish the community center. o Provide community assistance. o Interact with the residents of Touws River. Have the opportunity to purchase artisanal crafts and gifts.


Designated as a zone for Black Africans prior to apartheid, The Langa Township is a culturally-significant suburb of Cape Town. One of the oldest townships in South Africa, visit this area to learn about life in South Africa before apartheid. Robben Island is historically known for its isolated prison dating back all the way to the 1600s. Students explore the grounds and visit the cell of Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned here for 18 years. The island now houses a museum that commemorates South Africa's complicated past.


Students travel approximately 75 miles from Cape Town to the Hermanus Backpacker Lodge, ranked one of the best hostels throughout South Africa. ISA students can choose their own adventure by participating in activities such as sea kayaking, a whale-watching expedition, exploring the charming or relaxing on the nearby beach.
