Eligibility

  • 2.6 GPA. 

  • Minimum sophomore standing at a four-year institution at the time of participation.

VERITAS COURSE

All Veritas semester students will take their traditional courses at the host institution in addition to one 3-credit Veritas course. Students will choose one of the two courses below. The Comparative Religions course will be online and include students from across Veritas sites, and the Global Ministry Practicum will be online/on-site. 

Comparative Religions (HUM 353)

This course is an introduction to the major religious traditions of the world—particularly Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—and indigenous, new, and secular religions. The historical development, key figures, as well as major doctrines and practices are explored.

Global Ministry Practicum (HUM 490)

This course provides upper division credit for international ministry opportunities and an extended ministry experience designed to acquaint students with the implementation of missions principles in an international context through Veritas Christian Study Abroad programs.

Academic Information

Courses (called “papers” in New Zealand) are available in the below disciplines. For detailed instructions on how to find and select courses, and for a list of popular courses, see our course selection instructions. Students enroll in 3-4 papers per semester (54-72 Otago points), which usually transfers as 12-16 US semester credits or 18-24 US quarter credits.

Students will enroll approximately two months prior to departure through the University of Otago’s online system. Enrollment will be finalized on-campus during the University of Otago International Orientation.

Once it’s time to select courses, your TEAN Program Manager will be in touch with instructions on next steps on how to find courses and submit them on your online application.

Once you have entered your course selections in your online application, your TEAN Program Manager will submit your completed application for formal university approval.

SCHEDULE MEETING WITH ACADEMIC ADVISOR
  • It is highly recommended that you have your academic advisor approve your classes before leaving if you wish to ensure you receive transfer credit. If you do not wish to receive any credit when you return home you may be able to forego the approval process. Some students tackle the credit transfer issues when they return from their program, but at the very minimum you should at least meet with your academic advisor/dean before departure so they are fully aware you will be studying abroad. They will be able to help you select courses that will count towards your major and that will be easily transferable for credit when you return.
SCHEDULE MEETING WITH STUDY ABROAD OFFICE
  • Contact your study abroad office at your home university to discuss study abroad credit approval and other specific procedures to be completed for your program overseas. This is an important step as it may reveal crucial steps towards avoiding complications and making your transition abroad seamless. In addition, your study abroad advisor need to complete your “Statement from University” form. You can send this to them from your online application.
Credit Conversion
  • 1 University of Otago course = 18 credit points = 3 - 4 U.S. semester credits (4-6 U.S. quarter credits).
  • Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. 
Course Level Recommendations
  • ISA offers course level recommendations for the courses listed below. Please note that the course level recommendations are based on the University of Otago paper (course) codes. All Otago paper codes consist of four letter abbreviations detailing the discipline of the paper (such as STAT for statistics) and three numbers. Papers with numbers beginning with 1, 2 or 3 are designed for undergraduate students. A code beginning with 1 represents first-year studies, 2 second-year, and 3 third-year. Papers classified as second and third-year are recommended as upper division. These ISA recommendations are intended to facilitate the determination of course equivalencies by advisors and credential evaluators at your U.S. home institutions.
Online Courses
  • ISA does not recommend that you sign up for online courses through your host university. If enrolling in an online course is necessary for you to meet your degree requirements, you may only enroll in one online class. It is your responsibility to confirm with your home university that you will receive credit for online courses taken through your host university.

  • The transcript from the University of Otago will reflect Credit Points for each course listed below.  Please be in touch with your U.S. University regarding credit transfer for this program.
